35th Anniversary of PVH
November 18, 2008
Penobscot Valley Hospital is celebrating a landmark in service to the community. This year marks the 35th year the hospital has provided health care for a region that is now about 1,300 square miles, which is roughly the same size as Rhode Island.
On Wednesday, November 19, the hospital is hosting a 35th Anniversary Celebration in the main lobby of the facility from 2-3 p.m. “We’ll be unveiling our new founding donor wall,” says Spokesperson Allison Bankston. “This is a chance for us to honor the folks who helped start PVH and those who donate to the hospital’s annual fund from year to year.” The wall, which will be located in the main lobby, will feature a bottom section with the names of the founding donors and an upper area for the donors who have given during the last year.
“It’s a wonderful honor to be celebrating the longevity of this organization,” says CEO Dave Shannon. “We’re offering more services than ever before, and the facility just keeps growing.”
Shannon says the needs of the local communities have changed, and PVH has grown to meet those needs. The hospital has gone from paper medical records to a fully computerized system. The Imaging Department has converted its x-ray system from film to an all-digital process, and new laboratory equipment has been brought in to increase the speed of results.
“PVH is a very different hospital than it was even 5 years ago,” says Shannon. “We’re making significant and regular upgrades to our systems to ensure that our patients receive the quickest test results, the highest-quality care, and the best customer service.”
In the last few years, the hospital has added a new surgical wing, updated its patient registration area and main lobby, and added a number of key staff members. Most of the senior leadership team is still reasonably new, and PVH hired two new surgeons this year, specializing in laparoscopic procedures and ear, nose and throat care.
PVH has been honored in a number of ways in recent years, winning an award from Avatar International three times since 2002 for exceeding patient satisfaction. The hospital has also had a number of staff members recognized for their commitment. In 2008, Dave Shannon was chosen as a Business Person of the Year by the Lincoln Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, and Michael Corbin was honored as this year’s Maine Social Work Leader of the Year. Corbin started a local resource sharing group to bring social workers throughout the region together for the benefit of the community.
“We have a vision for the future of the hospital to ensure that we provide the services people need,” says Chief Nursing Officer Karen Mueller. “PVH will continue to offer high-quality, patient-centered care in a convenient location for the people of the Lincoln Lakes Region.”
