5th Annual Golf Tournament Raises $20,000
 |
Penobscot Valley Hospital’s 5th Annual Golf Tournament brought in more than $20,000, thanks to the generosity of golfers and sponsors. Seventy golfers from all over New England, and one traveling from Michigan, enjoyed this year’s tournament held at JaTo Highlands on Friday, August 19. “We were very happy with the fund raising results from this year’s tournament,” explains PVH Marketing & Fund Development Manager Kristie Libby. “Each year we hit a new record and I can’t thank our sponsors enough for their contributions to this worthy cause.”
Staff were more involved with this year’s tournament as they issued a challenge to CEO Dave Shannon. Over twenty staff members donated $500 to the tournament to see the CEO “Take One for the Team” and walk the course instead of enjoying the luxury of a power golf cart. “From the very beginning, I thought the challenge was a great idea, and I give credit to Dale King for approaching me with this creative suggestion,” states Shannon. “The proceeds from the tournament will be going toward patient safety initiatives including new falls prevention beds, and I am excited to see that so many of our staff members pledged a personal commitment to this cause. Walking the golf course at this year’s tournament was a visible gesture to show our community that all staff at PVH are ‘Committed to Patients First’.”
Also showing their commitment to patient safety are this year’s sponsors. The top donors at the Platinum level were Select Embroidery and Unidine. Gold sponsorship was Nurse Anesthesia of Maine, and Silver sponsors were Katahdin Valley Health Center and Thornton Brothers. The putting contest was sponsored by five entities including: Bangor Hydro Electric Company, Barresi Benefits Group, Comprehensive Pharmacy Services, Dahl-Chase Pathology Associates, Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, and SIEMENS. Players’ prizes were sponsored by Kelly, Remmel & Zimmerman, and Dysart’s Service, and Team prizes were brought to you by Gillmor’s Restaurant, Navix Diagnostics, PC Construction and Weatherby Healthcare.
Tee signs were purchased by: ADEX Medical Staffing, Amedisys Home Health, Canfield Systems, Capital Ambulance, CompHealth Locum Tenens, Custom Learning Systems Group, DeLaite Trucking, Quorum Health Resources, Whitten’s 2-Way Service, and Willis of Northern New England.
The tournament boasted six hole-in-one prizes including a golfing trip to Myrtle Beach, a $500 VISA gift card, an all terrain vehicle, a set of Nike golf clubs, a 32” LCD TV, and a Chrysler Touring 200. Thornton Brothers provided the car on the green at JaTo for players to see. No one won the hole-in-one prizes, but many folks walked away with great goody bag items and raffle prizes, including a $1,500 laptop from Dell. Other goods and donations were provided by:
- American Red Cross
- Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield
- Bangor Savings Bank
- Beverly King
- Clay’s Funeral Home

- Health Access Network
- Nonesuch River Golf Club
- Pattagumpus Village
- Select Embroidery

The event was followed by a steak barbeque and awards ceremony at the Lincoln Snowhounds Club. “We would like to thank the PVH Food Services Department, the volunteers who allowed the tournament to run smoothly, and especially the staff at JaTo Highlands for all of their help in making the event so successful,” Libby added.
