| The Diabetes Education Program at PVH is a diabetes help management program recognized by the American Diabetes Association. PVH is also recognized by the Maine Diabetes Prevention and Control Program as an Ambulatory Diabetes Education and Follow-up Program site (ADEF).
Our course is aimed at helping people with diabetes and their families understand and cope with the disease. The mission of the program is to provide information to help people with diabetes maintain a healthy lifestyle. A series including four classes is offered on a quarterly basis. The classes cover the following topics:
What is Diabetes?
- Causes & symptoms
- Understanding medications
- Exercise and physical activity
- Glucose monitoring
- Management & Prevention of complications, including foot care
- Nutritional management and meal planning
What to Expect from Diabetes Education
- Individualized meetings with a registered dietitian & a diabetes nurse educator
- Four classes taught by health professionals
- Follow-up contact after class completion
- A support person is encouraged to attend the program from start to finish at no additional cost.
- Most insurance companies cover some or all of the cost. Check with your insurance company if you have any questions.
