First Baby of 2012 Born at PVH
 |
 |

Penobscot Valley Hospital is pleased to introduce the first baby of 2012, Camryn Paige Lane who arrived here at 3:38 pm on January 1. Her mom is Kimberly Lane from Mattawamkeag. The new family was given a gift basket from PVH filled with hand-crafted items for the baby as well as goods and services provided by local businesses including: Bangor Savings Bank, Cole-Whitney Ford, High Performance Hair & Tanning, Judy Hanscom, PVH Auxiliary, thirty-one c/o Denise Wotton, and Wing Wah Restaurant.
As one of the first of Maine’s babies born in 2012, Camryn is one of the first eligible to receive the $500 Harold Alfond College Challenge grant (Alfond Grant) to start a NextGen College Investing Plan® (NextGen®) account. The Alfond Scholarship Foundation set up the grant program to help ensure access to higher education for all Maine’s children. All Maine resident babies may receive the grant if they are enrolled in NextGen on or before their first birthday. There is no family income limit or requirement to contribute any of the family’s own money to receive the grant.
Baby Camryn will also receive a tote bag and books from the Raising Readers program. The Libra Foundation instituted this program back in 2000 to encourage reading aloud as soon as possible to all Maine children.
“Newborns receive two to three books at birth and then one new book from their primary care physician at each well child visit until the age of 5,” explains Monica Vanadestine, RN Assistant Director of Inpatient Services at Penobscot Valley Hospital.
The Raising Readers program has brought books into the homes of nearly 190,000 Maine children over the last eleven years. Since 2000, more than 1.7 million books have been distributed. The result is that nearly all children age birth to five, have a personal library of a dozen books before going to school. That's something Maine can be proud of and no other state can claim.
In addition to a NextGen® college fund and a set of new books, all newborns delivered at PVH will also receive a gift bag from the Auxiliary filled with baby blankets, clothing, and other goodies for the new family. The PVH Food Services department plans a special birthday celebration complete with a birthday cake and surprise. Parents enjoy giving birth close to home and appreciate the comforting surrounds in the two, private birthing suites available at PVH.
If you have a baby on the way, Penobscot Valley Hospital offers many opportunities for Childbirth Education Classes throughout the year. Upcoming class dates for 2012 include: January 28, April 28, July 28, and October 27. This course covers comfort during pregnancy, relaxation techniques, pain control, baby care, and much more. Call PVH at (207) 794-7270 to register for this very important class.
For more information on the Harold Alfond College Challenge please call 800-228-3734 or visit www.500forbaby.org. For more information on the Raising Readers program, visit www.raisingreaders.org.
The Alfond Grant is awarded to a NextGen account. NextGen is a Section 529 plan administered by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME). Before you invest in NextGen, request a NextGen Program Description from your Maine bank or financial advisor, or call FAME at 1-800-228-3734, and read it carefully. The Program Description contains more complete information, including investment objectives, charges, expenses and risks of investing in NextGen, which you should carefully consider before investing. You also should consider whether your home state or your designated beneficiary’s home state offers any state tax or other benefits that are only available for investments in such state’s Section 529 plan. Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Incorporated, a registered broker-dealer, Member SIPC, is the program manager and underwriter. See Grant Terms and Conditions for more details.
