Diabetes Education
Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. Since 1994, the number of cases of diabetes has more than doubled, and experts predict that the number of new cases of the disease will continue to rise through 2020. Research shows that improved control of blood sugar as well as other lifestyle factors can significantly reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes. Teaching people to manage their diabetes can prevent complications and hospitalizations for diabetes-related illnesses.
The PVH Diabetes Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and the Maine Diabetes Prevention and Control Program as a provider of Diabetes Self Managment Education. Diabetes Education is provied by a Registered Nurse and Registered Dietitian with specialized training in diabetes education.
Diabetes Education programs are provided in both individual educational sessions and group classes. Some of our programs are held on an ongoing bases, and others are offered periodically throughout the year.
Diabetes Physical Activity
PVH also provides a Diabetes Physical Activity program for patients with diabetes and prediabetes. Daily physical activity is crucial in the treatment of diabetes. This program, taught by an RN Diabetes Educator, will improve strength, flexibility, and endurance. The exercise session consists of a warm-up, 45 mintues of individual gym activities, 20 minutes of group activities with free weights, and a cool-down. During the sessions, the educator offers encouragement and support on how to manage diabetes. All the Diabetes Physical Activity sessions are held in Conference Room D of the PVH Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in downtown Lincoln.
Diabetes Physical Activity Schedule:
Tuesday and Thursdays 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Rehabilitation and Wellenss Center, downtown Lincoln
Monthly Fee: $30.00
Getting started is as easy as a phone call. Call Diabetes Educator Sherry McCafferty at 794-7311 for more information about Diabetes Education, or you can contact your physician and ask for a referral.
