Obstetrical Services

Penobscot Valley Hospital offers a caring, supportive environment for childbirth with a wide range of educational programs. These instructions are designed to prepare expectant parents for the labor and delivery experience. In the hospital, mothers receive special one-to-one attention from our experienced nursing staff. After delivery, family-centered care is emphasized. Family education at PVH includes the following:
- New Baby Bathing
- Circumcision Care
- Umbilical Cord Care
- Newborn Hearing Screening (Precious Sounds)
- Breastfeeding and Lactation
Rooming In
With the expert help of our nursing staff, new mothers keep their babies with them in their own rooms. Getting to know one another and becoming comfortable with infant care is an essential part of the infant-parent relationship. Spending more time together before leaving the hospital is a great way to start. Rooming-in allows the whole family to be involved with the baby and provides a nurturing environment for the mother and baby.
