The Staff & Skills Behind the Surgical Masks
Surgical patients at Penobscot Valley Hospital frequently become acquainted with the surgical team working in our operating room. This group includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, surgical technicians and certified registered nurse anesthetists. Each member of the team brings specialized skills to the group’s responsibilities. In a small hospital like PVH, there is a significant amount of cross-training to provide support for patients who require surgery in emergencies after normal business hours

Your Needs are Unique
When your doctor schedules a surgical procedure, many activities are set into motion. Patients are asked to make an appointment for a pre-operative evaluation, which allows the staff to get to know you and understand any special needs you may have. This is also an opportunity for the patient to get to know the staff and hospital environment.

Patients are greeted by the staff on the day of surgery and accompanied by the staff throughout the surgical procedure and immediate post-operative recovery. Afterward, instructions for after-care and follow-up with their physician are explained. After discharge, patients are called at home to see how they are doing, if their pain medication is adequate, and if they have any additional questions or concerns about their surgical site. Patients are also asked for suggestions on what could have made the surgical experience a better one.

Today, most surgical procedures are performed on an ambulatory basis because of improved technology, pharmaceuticals for anesthesia and pain control, and enhanced physician skills. Many patients who undergo a procedure in the morning are home by late afternoon.
Surgical Improvements

PVH continuously evaluates its instruments to maintain the highest standards and to assure that state-of-the-art equipment is available to support surgical services. The hospital encourages the participation of physicians who perform surgery at PVH and surgical staff members in the process of evaluation and purchasing of new equipment. PVH offers:
  • General surgery
  • OB/GYN services
  • Podiatry (foot) surgery
  • Ophthalmology (cataract) surgery
  • Minor orthopedic procedures
  • Diagnostic procedures that require sedation
The personal touch of an experienced staff by the people you know can make the surgical experience a pleasant and more comfortable one for every patient.
