In October, Samer Sbayi, MD, FACS, accompanied by his wife, Rania Tayara, traveled to San Francisco, California to be accepted as a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Sbayi has been practicing as a general surgeon at Penobscot Valley Hospital since 2008. As a general surgeon, he is trained to diagnose, treat and manage patients with a broad spectrum of surgical conditions.
The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.
Members of the American College of Surgeons are referred to as "Fellows." The letters FACS (Fellow, American College of Surgeons) after a surgeon's name mean that the surgeon's education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.
Earlier this year, Brian Miller, MD, FACS, was also notified of his acceptance as a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Miller is an otolaryngologist, a physician who specializes in head and neck surgery, and provides comprehensive medical care for patients with diseases of the ear, nose and throat - often referred to as an ENT doctor. Dr. Miller works at Mayo Surgical Associates and is employed by Mayo Regional Hospital through a collaborative agreement with Millinocket Regional Hospital and Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln, spending time at all three locations.
“Our community is very fortunate to have Dr. Sbayi and Dr. Miller practicing at our hospital. All of us at PVH congratulate both surgeons for their acceptance as Fellows in the American College of Surgeons,” states PVH CEO Dave Shannon.
Fellows are board-certified surgeons. When you choose a surgeon who is board certified in a surgical specialty, you are assured that he or she has completed years of residency training in his specialty and has demonstrated his knowledge and competence by successfully completing a rigorous examination.
“A Fellow has committed himself unequivocally to place the welfare of his patients above any other consideration,” states Kathy Schneider, PVH Physician Practice Manager. “At Penobscot Valley Hospital we are very proud to have such highly trained surgeons on our staff as Samer Sbayi MD, FACS and Brian Miller MD, FACS.”
