The Dangers of the Media

Former Bangor Police Officer Dan Frazell is bringing his nationally known seminar about the influences of today’s media to Lincoln. S.P.R.I.N.T. for Life and M.S.A.D. # 67 are sponsoring the free session called “How the Media is Killing Our Children”. The event is free and takes place at Mattanawcook Academy’s Cafeteria on Wednesday, June 4th at 5:30 p.m.

Frazell says the presentation takes a little over two hours and will focus on music, movies, news reports, the internet, and other media sources that influence today’s kids. “It’s a hard look at some of today’s top TV programs, video games, and other venues such as MySpace and Facebook that can have a huge effect on young people.” Frazell says his presentation is not about censorship. It’s about parents and care givers being more aware.

“Young people, today, are bombarded by violent imagery and mixed messages,” says M.S.A.D. #67’s School Health Coordinator. “This is a great opportunity for parents and other adults to take a closer look at what kids are seeing and hearing, and you may be surprised at what you’ve been overlooking.”

Frazell, who retired from the Bangor Police Department this year after more than 20 years serving the community, has spent many years traveling all across the nation and into Canada doing these presentations. Frazell was the first D.A.R.E. officer in the state of Maine, and in 2002, he was awarded the “D.A.R.E. America Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with young people. He also serves as a D.A.R.E. mentor for 15 years and is a former president of the National D.A.R.E. Board of Directors.

“We’re very lucky to have such a highly recognized and committed speaker coming to Lincoln,” says new S.P.R.I.N.T. For Life Coordinator Robin Carr-Slauenwhite. “This seminar will be helpful to anyone who deals with kids, including parents, teachers, youth group leaders, pastors, and police officers.” Again, the session starts at 5:30 p.m. on June 4th at the Mattanawcook Academy Cafeteria in Lincoln.
S.P.R.I.N.T. For Life is a grant funded program through Penobscot Valley Hospital and a Healthy Maine Partnership. The Agency works in conjunction with M.S.A.D. # 67 and other schools in the region to promote healthy eating, drug and alcohol use prevention, tobacco cessation, and regular physical activity.
