New Year's Baby at PVH
The first baby born at Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln during 2009 arrived at 7:43 p.m. on New Year’s Day. Jaidence Kimberly Solomon Pelkey of Mattawamkeag is the daughter of Katrina Solomon and Adam C. Pelkey. Jaidence weighed 8 pounds and 3 ounces and measured 21 ½ inches at birth on January 1. The new parents were given a gift basket from PVH which included donated, hand-crafted items for the baby as well as donated goods and services from local businesses including Earth’s Bounty, Cole-Whitney Ford, Wing Wah, Wal-Mart, and Hannaford.
Jaidence, along with all other Maine babies born in 2009, will be eligible through the Harold Alfond College Challenge to receive a $500 grant to start a NextGen College Investing Plan® account. Beloved philanthropist Harold Alfond established the program before he died to ensure access to higher education for all Maine’s children. There is no income limit or need to contribute additional money to receive the grant, however, parents have the option to add more to the college fund to help it grow.
Prior to leaving the hospital, the families of all babies born at PVH will be given information about the Harold Alfond College Challenge and instructions on how to open a NextGen® account. Babies’ families must open a NextGen account before the child’s first birthday to receive the Alfond Grant.
“We’re very happy to be offering this information to the parents of babies born at our hospital,” says PVH spokesperson Allison Bankston. “The cost of college tuition continues to rise, and these funds can be a big help to families in Maine.”
As of January 1, 2009, the Harold Alfond College Challenge was extended statewide to all babies born in Maine or who become Maine residents before their first birthday, including those born at PVH. It is expected there will be 14,000 babies born in Maine in 2009. The Alfond Grant program is administered by FAME, the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME).

This new foundation is a partnership of organizations and individuals who truly embrace Mr. Alfond’s philosophy, and includes representatives from the Maine Compact for Higher Education, FAME, the University of Maine System, the Maine Community College System, the Maine Community Foundation, the Mitchell Institute, and at-large members that include representatives from MaineGeneral Health and the Maine Hospital Association.
