You can canoe the surrounding lakes and rivers (in season) and hike or hunt endless miles of back roads and paths. The Penobscot River is navigable with bigger craft and the smallmouth bass fishing on this stretch is as good as anywhere else in the country. Eagles patrol the whole length of the Penobscot whenever you're out there. Moose tracks are everywhere and almost everyone enjoys seeing a few of the beasts every year. Bears are abundant but elusive, panthers are present but reclusive.
People here are gentle, friendly, and welcoming, the schools highly-rated, the drinking water pure and cold. In a way, it's not as remote as it seems. · a well-connected international airport
· chain stores and specialty shops
· theater
· the nation's oldest municipal orchestra
· restaurants of every description
· abundant lodging, and much more.
Bangor is home to a major medical center, and the main campus of the University of Maine is found close by in Orono, (nearer to Lincoln). In addition to the University's educational offerings, it also provides NCAA championship sports and is the site of the Maine Center for the Performing Arts with an annual concert series featuring internationally-renowned performers. |
