After an injury, illness or surgical procedure, you may qualify to stay in the Swing Bed Program
(or sometimes known as skilled care) at Penobscot Valley Hospital. Skilled care means that you no longer require constant monitoring and treatment by a physician, but you still might need the daily services of other healthcare professionals. This sometimes includes patients who are unable to drive to appointments for rehabilitation services like physical therapy, wound care, or IV therapy; while you learn to manage a new medical condition such as diabetes; or for recovery after surgery.Research shows that visiting with family and friends helps speed the recovery process for patients, and recovering close to home allows for more visits from loved ones. PVH has a very accommodating visiting schedule and even allows children and pets in to see their loved ones.
After visiting with one patient over a rousing game of BINGO, he told me, “I wouldn’t want to recover anywhere else. The staff here know me and treat me better than their own family!”
Other benefits of receiving skilled care at PVH include:
A hospital physician to monitor your care and progress.
Imaging and lab services are available on site.
The same nursing and rehabilitative staff will continue to work with you throughout recovery.
Great meals and social activities.
PVH Case Manager, Sue Head, RN adds, “Skilled care at PVH also includes access to professional services such as social work, daily planned activities, cosmetology, family meetings with healthcare providers, and discharge planning for a safe return home. Our patients leave with a great level of knowledge on how to continue to improve their health at home.”
Even if you’ve had a procedure at another hospital, you can still be transferred to the Swing Bed Program at PVH, so speak up and ask your physician for a referral. A team of professional staff assists in making arrangements with you for the Swing Bed Program. If you have questions about skilled care, contact the PVH Case Management
department at (207) 794-5346.
